Another Reason You Wish You Were Michael Healey

Check out the Wall Street Journal's list of the Top 11 Most Produced Plays in America in the last decade.  No huge surprises. Number one is Proof by David Auburn.  Number two is, of course, Doubt.   Wit, The Rabbit Hole, and I Am My Own Wife are all on the list as well.

And number four on the list?  Our very own Michael Healey's The Drawer Boy!

When I read that, I became as giddy as a McGill student when Jon Stewart takes a dig at Canada on The Daily Show.  "Oh look! They mentioned us!"  Of course we shouldn't be too shocked.  The Drawer Boy (1999) is a favourite among Canadian audiences.  It won a Dora, the Chalmers, and a Governor General's Award.  Hell, I don't even care that the Journal brushed off the play with the following query:

"What does this list tell us? To begin with, six of the 11 plays—"Doubt," "I Am My Own Wife," "Intimate Apparel," "The Glass Menagerie," "Proof" and "Wit"—are all distinguished pieces of writing, while the rest are at least respectable."

~ Terry Teachout, The Wall Street Journal

And even though it is the only Canadian play on the list, it IS a Canadian play based on another Canadian play, so I am going to celebrate it twice!
